Duyu bowl from the Philippines, Ifugao

The ifugao from the Philippines serve food and drink from these Duyu bowls. During rituals priests drank rice wine from a duyu bowl to reach an altered state of awareness and to get in contact with ancestor spirits.
The bowls were washed after each use and rubbed with duck fat or lard this in combination with the soot from the cooking fire gives the nice dark patina. In the base some holes so the bowl can be hung.
